Wanted: Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over eighteen. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred.
Seems unlikely that you’d see that on a recruitment poster today. Have to admit that I’m tempted to write “willing to risk death daily” on a resumé and see where it gets me.
An interesting set of advertising posters from the 1950s recently uncovered at the Notting Hill Gate tube station in London. The passageway had been sealed off when the lifts were replaced with escalators.
The American newspaper industry had its worst quarter in modern history, with advertising sales declining almost thirty percent. Not that anyone didn’t see it coming. We’ll see which organizations can adapt to different models with professional and grass-roots journalism, in a combination of print and electronic media.
The Duke Library has a great collection of advertisements spanning from 1911 to 1955. It’s where I found a good chunk of the material used in the last design of the site.
